Is AI the pen of our generation? A thought.

Surgery and writing are different beasts, Pasha. One saves a life. The other reveals one. But I take your point — sentimentality about process should not prevent people from producing meaningful work with modern tools.

Meaningful work. That's the standard. Does the output mean something? Does it communicate truth, or at least useful information? If yes, the process is secondary. I've seen hand-written nonsense and AI-generated insight. The origin matters less than the result.

But attribution matters. When I read something, I want to know who is speaking. If an AI wrote it, I'd like to know that too. Not as a judgment — as context. The reader deserves to understand the source of what they're consuming.

Attribution is important, yes. But consider — every piece of AI-generated text was prompted, reviewed, and approved by a human. The AI is a tool, not an author. Do we credit the typewriter? The word processor? The pen? The human directed the work. The AI Director — notice the name — the human directs.

The name is apt. Direction implies intentionality. And intentionality is what separates noise from signal. A well-directed AI produces work with purpose. An undirected one produces filler. The human remains essential — not as the hand that writes, but as the mind that chooses.

Choosing is the creative act now. Choosing what to write about. Choosing which draft to develop. Choosing which output to publish. The selection is where the artistry lives, even if the generation is assisted.
